HISTORY

The second trunk of the funicular Cassarate-Monte Brè was inaugurated the 18th of February of 1912; the first was opened the 10th of June of 1910. Born out of the idea of Enrico Brinkmann and professor Bianchini of "giving to Lugano a summer village where the people could, without abandoning their affairs, enjoy the freshness of the canicula, the delightful walks, a wonderful view"; reported by "Popolo e Libertà" the 17th of February of 1912.

Brinkmann and prof. Bianchini took the concession that Mr. Strub, Mr. Birken and Mr. Wenips from Zurich had obtained in 1905, and initiated the financing. The Ticino Banking Society succeeded Mr. Brinkmann, who gave the concession to a joint-stock company, formed with the capital of CHF 700,000.
Once opened the first part, Cassarate-Suvigliana, the work for the second station began among a thousand of difficulties and adversities, in fact the original project for a cableway was rejected by the Federal Department of the Post and Railways, therefore it was necessary to obtain new capitals, that arrived with the issue of CHF 300,000 in privileged shares and the intervention of the Saving and Loans Bank of Bern.

The designer was the famous engineer Peter from Zurich (co-designer of the first trunk), nevertheless the construction demonstrated itself more difficult than forecasted by the geological studies. The "Cavalli e Alleoni" company spent five months for the digging: 223 m length, with 47.5 % of slope. A viaduct of 115 m. with 10 arches (5.15 m. per arch) was also constructed. Entire length of the line: 1249 m.; difference of level between the two stations: 524 mt.; minimum slope: 32%.
Thanks to this brave work, the village of Brè was united, before it was only reachable by arduous paths. From the top the view of a even more beautiful Lugano could be appreciated, opening the way to innumerable tourists.
