The Wilhelm Schmid Museum

THE STORY OF BRÈ’S MOST IMPORTANT PAINTER

The district of Brè village was also home to Wilhelm Schmid (1892-1971), a prominent exponent of the New Objectivity movement, which emerged in Germany in the 1920s.

What was once the home of the painter from the Canton of Aargau is now an important museum in Brè, left as a gift to the city of Lugano according to his wife Maria Schmid’s wishes.

Inside the museum, you can retrace Schmid’s main works while witnessing the interesting artistic evolution of the painter’s career, characterized by a painting style featuring simplified forms, muted colours, and violent flashes of light.
